The deeper the water, the faster you want your jig to get to the bottom. A heavier weighted jig will drop faster than a lighter weighted jig. Ideally you want your jig to be positioned vertically below you when it gets to the bottom. To achieve this, you can use a heavier weight jig to combat any current, or you could cast the jig ahead of you and left it drift back to underneath the boat as it descends.
